When you hear ramen noodles, you probably think back to the college days of buying Top Ramen instant noodles in bulk for cheap, easy meals. These days, the authentic version of Japanese ramen is a big food trend. Rich, flavorful broth serves as the base for ramen noodles topped with meat, a soft boiled egg, bamboo shoots and more. There’s probably a good chance you have a ramen shop nearby where you live! Set aside the instant noodle version and give a real bowl of ramen a try. No need to feel intimidated by this big bowl of unusual items. Here are my five tips to make you feel like a pro for your first time.
Take less than you think you need
Using your chopsticks, pull apart less noodles than you think you need from the bowl. This will create a good bite size segment for you to tackle. Use the large spoon to help you hold the noodles up out of the broth.
It’s gonna get messy and there’s a very good chance you’ll end up with broth on your face, but that’s okay! Purse your lips together as if you were going to drink hot coffee and quickly slurp up the ramen noodles from your chop sticks. The louder sound effects, the better!
Ramen is usually served with a soft boiled egg. This is one of my favorite parts! Open the egg by poking it with your chop sticks and then use the spoon to scoop it up. The rich yolk will add even more flavor to the broth and add protein to this indulgent dish.
Ready, set, go
Eat quickly! A bowl of ramen is technically supposed to be consumed within about 10 minutes. The texture of the noodles change when they sit in the broth for too long and expand. Eating your bowl within that 10 minute period will keep the authenticity of the noodles. While it may take a little getting used to, once you get the technique down you’ll be slurping those noodles up in a flash.
The best part
Don’t let that broth go to waste! The broth for ramen takes hours to cook and serves as the flavor base for the dish. As you eat the noodles and toppings, use the spoon to drink up the broth. Think of the broth as cereal milk after a bowl of your favorite cereal. As a kid if you used to drink the milk straight from the bowl, you can do the same thing with ramen. Just pick it up and drink up all that amazing broth.
