Over the course of the last two years, I have had some really amazing opportunities to travel to cities for work. When I’m traveling often it is easy to think about each chance to eat out as a chance to indulge in something I wouldn’t normally eat at home. All those meals add up and result in me feeling not so great when I return home.
Now that the new year is in full swing, I am not only wanting to eat healthy while I travel, but also make healthier choices every time I eat out. It’s easy to forget my own advice and indulge every time. I put together my six tips for feeling better when you eat out and making solid decisions when you order.
Salads aren’t always the best.
One thing that is a surprise to some people is that salads are not always the best way to be healthier. When toppings and heavy dressings pile up over the greens, you’re sacrificing the health for empty calories and fat. Review the toppings on a salad and stick to ones with veggies, fruits, light cheese and pick the vinaigrette.
Dressings on the side.
One thing to stay a little healthier with other meals is to ask for things like hollandaise sauce, gravy, maple syrup or sauces on the side. It’s a really easy trick and will help you moderate. If you dip your bites as you go, it will help keep your salad light!
Think about your sides.
If nothing else mattered in the world, I would always order fries as my side. But, in an effort to keep up a healthy lifestyle, one of the easiest ways to eat better out is by swapping fries or chips for a side salad, fruit or cottage cheese. Basically anything that isn’t fried will be a healthier option and allow you to feel a little lighter when you leave.
When you order your food, get a to-go box right as you start eating. Put half of the order in the box and set it aside (or under your chair!). You will be so happy to have a meal to take home, and then you won’t be as tempted to eat it while it’s sitting on your plate.
Bye bye bread.
I have to admit, this one is hard for me because I love my carbs, but one of the easiest ways to eat healthier while you’re out and about is to take off at least one slice of bread from sandwiches, paninis or burgers. You honestly will be able to taste the flavors of the food better since you’ll be biting right into the sandwich and you’ll be saving your self some carbs!
You *actually* don’t have to eat everything.
Contrary to popular belief, you really do not have to eat everything on your plate. I am writing this cautiously because I know some people were raised with other views and it can feel wasteful to leave food behind (especially since you paid for it), but one of the easiest ways to be healthier is to not eat everything that you are served. Try a bite of everything, eat slowly as your savor the flavors and sip water in between. Once you’re feeling full – boom! You’re good to go! No need to eat anymore, offer up samples to your friends and tell the waiter he or she can take your plate. Restaurants serve huge portions anyway!
I hope this has given you a few ideas for eating healthier while you’re out at restaurants. I would love to hear your insight – how do you feel and eat healthier while you’re out to eat?
Love food. Love self. Love life.
