Adapted from The Faux Martha, these baked apple donuts are a lighter and healthier alternative to the fall classic.
  • Donuts
  • 3 tbsp. unsalted butter
  • ⅓ cup plus 2 tablespoons apple cider
  • 1 cup white whole wheat flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • ¼ teaspoon sea salt
  • ½ teaspoon cinnamon
  • ⅛ tsp. nutmeg
  • ¼ cup sugar
  • 2 tablespoons maple syrup
  • 1 large egg
  • Non-stick cooking spray
  • Topping
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • ⅓ cup sugar
  • 1½ teaspoons cinnamon
  • Special tools
  • Donut baking pan
  • 1 large plastic bag
  1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees.
  2. Melt butter for donuts on the stove slowly or in the microwave in 30 second intervals. Stir in apple cider and set aside to cool.
  3. Whisk together flour, baking powder, sea salt, cinnamon and nutmeg in a medium bowl. Set aside.
  4. Into the butter and cider mixture, whisk in sugar, maple syrup and egg.
  5. Add wet mixture into dry ingredients until just combined. Mix until just incorporated. It is okay if there are lumps in the batter. Spray donut pan. Add batter to a piping bag and pipe evenly into the pan.
  6. Bake for 7 minutes. Wait 1 minute before removing donuts from pan and placing on cooling rack. While donuts cool, melt butter for topping. In a flat-bottomed bowl or plate, mix together cinnamon and sugar.
  7. Lightly dip one side of the donut in butter and place buttered-side-down into cinnamon/sugar mixture. Place back on cooling rack, but they are best eaten warm as soon as possible!
