I started Gourmet Gab as a freshman in college where I was looking to blend my passions of food and journalism. What started as a source for Phoenix restaurant reviews or college dorm cooking types has grown into a source for healthy recipes, entertaining videos and tips for navigating the kitchen. I aim to share simple and healthy recipes on Gourmet Gab, always staying true to recipes I can guarantee are both flavorful and good for you.
When I first decided to start my food blog in August of 2010 the motto “Love food. Love self. Love life.” seemed so natural. These three things are important ingredients in the recipe for a joyful life.
To me, appreciating the delicious tastes of food is what life is all about. If we all need to eat to stay nourished, my philosophy is why not eat simple, gourmet and healthy meals everyday. I hope to help people to see that eating flavorful food that is good for you is attainable for every lifestyle.
My mom used to always preach the saying, “Everything in moderation.” Splurging on sweet and rich treats should be a guilt-free feeling, as long as you know you are taking care of your body in other ways. This is what I call loving oneself. It’s treating yourself to the small, or the big, things when you need it. It’s a balancing act that is learned with time. It’s loving who you are as a unique and individual person, without judgement or comparison to others. Sure we can eat salads and produce and protein, but I also believe we should leave a little room for some fun–room to celebrate and balance.
In my philosophy, a person’s life can thrive once you connect loving food and loving oneself. The big picture may become a little bit clearer once we can see how the delicious, beautiful, bittersweet and challenging parts come together. Life is not perfect or predictable. I learned that too early when I lost my mom to a sudden brain aneurysm at the age of 15. If she taught me one thing it was to celebrate life. She used to tell me, “Smile, it’s contagious!”
I have been blessed with a huge family, incredible friends and neighbors, and a network of others who lift me up. Food is always a source that brings up together. Some of the best memories in my life include sharing meals in great company and laughing with others in the kitchen. Being able to spread joy to others through food and make delicious memories in life motivates me to write this blog. I have seen the connection between food and happiness in my own life. I hope that you, too, will see that when you love food, you understand how to love yourself. And when you embrace loving yourself, you can come to a full awareness of the beautiful gift we call life.
Love food. Love self. Love life.
